Lionel Sams - Nickname: The Lion
v
Lives: Kingston, Surrey
v
First came onto the Darts scene in the early
1980's when he was just ‘18’,
more for fun than serious (he used to
turn up on his motorbike to play then!).
v
He had a natural ability towards darts and so
got called upon to join several pub
leagues (almost every night of the
week!). He played around Wimbledon,
Wandsworth and Battersea areas mainly
before joining Surrey super league
around 1985.
v
He entered a few BDO ranked events like
Camber Sands, Hemsby and Prestatyn where
he found he could have a weekend away
and cover back more than it cost him. In
1986 he had entered the Ladbrokes
festival of darts and he won through to
the Televised stages, (Anglia TV) where
he won the semi and then eventually lost
out to Australian International, Terry
O’Dea.
v
Also in 1986 he won all 7 Singles
Events that year for the Bromley and
Downham District League!
v
He then played for Surrey County A from
1986 - 1990 when he changed over to
play for London County A and did so up
to 1992, even returning to London
for a final season in 2004/05.
v
In 1988 he won through an impressive
field to take the Camber Sands Open
title .
v
In 1993 a severe back injury forced
him to quit competitive darts for 8
years.
v
In Sept 2001 he had entered and won
through in the Paddy Power World Grand
Prix Qualifiers and narrowly missed out
at the final hurdle. Not deterred, he
joined the PDPA and began life on the
road with the PDC Pro Circuit. In
2002, he secured many great results
and including the 9-dart perfect game
against Ronnie Baxter at Le Skratch
Tournament, in Montreal and followed
with a Quarter final showing in
Saskatoon the following week.
v
2003/04 and 05 have seen Lionel consistently climbing up the rankings and as at
April 2006 he remains in the top 20 of
the PDC World Rankings. Why not buy
these darts and try your luck as well!
They could just be lucky for you.
